Written by: Nick BessignanoDC has long played second fiddle to studio giant Marvel. However as Marvel ended their Avengers streak last April with Endgame, DC and parent company Warner Bros. are taking advantage of the growing superhero market. Over the weekend the first ever DC Fandome premiered which featured appearances from the stars and filmmakers of DC’s upcoming film slate, The DC Extended Universe. Here’s a look at a few of the projects that were showcased.
One of the most anticipated movies teased was 2021’s The Batman starring Robert Pattinson and directed by Matt Reeves. The film is inspired by the Batman comic “Year Two.” This means we will be spared from witnessing the killing of Martha and Thomas Wayne, otherwise known as Batman’s origin story. This version will jump ahead a few years in the timeline and feature Pattinson as “The World’s Greatest Detective .'' The stacked cast features Paul Dano as The Riddler, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, and Colin Farrell as The Penguin. The Batman hits theaters October 1st, 2021.
Another film drawing hype isn’t exactly an original, but is a director's cut to Zack Snyder’s Justice League. The production of Justice League was notoriously bogged down back in 2017 with reshoots. This new telling of the movie will be in four, one-hour installments that will flesh out the storyline of Cyborg (played by Ray Fisher). According to Snyder he will be “the heart of film”. The trailer for The Snyder Cut features previously unseen footage of villain Darkseid. Warner Bros. has not announced an exact date but has ensured that it will drop in 2021 on the company’s streaming platform HBO Max.
Another bombshell announcement from the event came from the upcoming movie The Flash . The film will be the first DC entry to explore the franchise’s multiverse. It is loosely based on the comic book storyline of “Flashpoint” that deals with Barry Allen (The Flash) traveling back in time to save his mother from dying. According to filmmaker Andy Mushietti he will team up with not one but two Batman’s throughout his journey! You heard it right, Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck will return and assist Ezra Miller’s Flash in navigating the time space continuum. The Flash will start its run into theaters on June 2nd, 2022. Will DC comics follow the Marvel blueprint and cross over a new generation of superheroes into a shared universe? Time will tell but for now it looks like we will be getting some very promising content to keep us busy for the next few years.
